The Tube

Cash handling in 1946

I worked at Trewins in Watford during 1946.  I'm 85 now living in Florida, USA.  Back then when I wrote a sales ticket, I would put the ticket and money in a tube.  It would shoot up to the floor above. That was my last job in England.  I married a soldier and moved to America.

Lamson tubes ( pneumatic tubes) are systems in which cylindrical containers are propelled through a network of tubes by compressed air or by vacuum. They are used for transporting solid objects.

These tubes became popular in the late 19th and early 20th century for businesses that needed to transport small packages (such as money) over relatively short distances (within a building).

A similar system is still used in the store today to send details of stock to and from departments to various points.
